Pawns

Pawn 1: Meaning

Pawn 3: Boxer’s Reward

Pawn 6: Nature

My idea here is obviously we are all pawns in some way. The list of possible sources is too long to even adequately describe, but this does not mean all is lost. It is not always such a bad thing, not with a good amount of self-awareness and common sense. The key is knowing and understanding. It is not about being a helpless victim but about abandoning self-deception and destructive external influence and becoming an active thinker. Only then can you achieve some degree of autonomy.

These are the most overtly socio-political images I have created. They range from allegories of specific events to critiques of ideologies. They are designed to be intentionally vague and difficult to decipher. Although each has a story and a definite meaning, they are meant to incite individual thought about the overarching concept, the possibilities, and the inevitabilities that are implicit in them.

These images are another of the series that were created with the graphite and polyurethane, and although abstract, contain more recognizable forms, most notably the pawn symbol, common to each.

Graphite, polyurethane, and mixed media on watercolor paper.
