Individual Works Gallery
The artworks in this gallery are those that are not part of any series, for the most part. They are creations sparked by a singular idea, to serve a singular purpose. Some are pieces made for individual commissions, random ideas I wanted to see how would turn out, university assignments, or for friends and family. They are varied in medium, style, and size. They range from early on in my artistic endeavors to fairly recent. Those that are shown here number probably a fifth of the pieces that could fit into this category, that of good quality finished works, but I do not have pictures of those. For a long time I was very remiss in taking photographs of my artwork, one of those things I would go back and correct if I could talk to my younger self. It would be nice to have a complete record of the art I have made over the years.

I have always enjoyed drawing, and have a distinct talent for it, but while I was in college I specialized in ceramics. This sprouted from a course I took on Asian art, and what I saw as the sheer beauty of the ceramic objects I was exposed to in that class. I never became a master of throwing on the wheel, but got pretty good, and learning it was an enjoyable challenge.
The most fun, and best work, I created out of clay were the more sculptural pieces, whether modified from thrown objects or molded and built from slabs, coils, and lumps of clay. I enjoy the feel of the clay, the various tools, and seeing something come together slowly, bit by bit, with care and precision. I was told by one of my teachers that I would never make a good potter, because I cared about each piece too much. I had to quit “babying” them. I guess there’s truth in that. I was never fast by any measure and would spend extra time just to make something come out precisely the way I envisioned it.

There are stories behind all of these creations, some interesting, some only interesting to me. I guess that is what art is in one way, a way of remembering or thinking about something, and all good art seems to have a story linked to it in some way or another. It is a link to an event or a memory, whether such is the depiction of the art or just an attachment to it. An art historian might say that nostalgia does not make for good art, but I find myself hit with it every time I look over the pieces I have created. I can remember where I was in life, what I was doing, the people around me at the time, and what I was thinking. Sometimes this makes it hard to let go of a piece when it is finished, and I end up keeping them, when all they do is sit in yet another pile of stuff I can’t bear to part with. I guess that is true for everyone in some way.
