Biblical Poly Graphite Paintings
These images were created over the long period of time I have been interested in and experimenting with the process of “painted drawings” using pencil, powdered graphite, polyurethane, and white enamel paint on heavy watercolor paper. The process involves many layers of drawing with pencil, painting with the powdered graphite mixed in various shades, and application of inclusions, all bound with polyurethane. It is, by the nature of the mediums, a lengthy process. There are parts that involve intricate and detailed attention and areas that are loose and frenetic. It is also not a medium that can be photographed or reproduced well enough to see its true effects, layering, and texture.
I am always interested in Biblical subjects, and sometimes in my readings or thinking, an image will come to mind about a concept or story or phrase, and I will want to depict it visually. For these, I decided to go completely abstract. This was largely the mode I employed for the graphite works and I thought that the ideas could be expressed visually well using a symbolic abstraction. This was interesting because each singular concept was expressed, but the compositions allude to the overarching story.
