This series originally began as the fusion of two separate ideas. I had been collecting photographs of angel statues, from graveside monuments to garden decorations, with the intention of one day doing something with them. I admire both their form and symbolism, and as I am a minimalist at heart (as you can tell from the choice of background), their general simplicity of design. Also, I was in the frame of mind to use color, perhaps continuing with the flower motif I had been playing around with for some time.

This led to the spring angel drawing, which was going to be a single piece called Angel of Flowers, but once I came up with the composition the idea popped in my head immediately to do a drawing for each season.

I wanted them to be unified in concept and form, but to also be distinctive from one another. I also ended up with an extra season, Christmas. I couldn’t think of a way to combine the depiction of winter-ness I wanted with any symbols of Christmas without it becoming seen as an image of the holiday season, but since it is such an integral component of winter to me, I could not leave it out. So I decide to draw one for both.
